Detect Airborne Hazards Using ChemSee Dosimeters
Chlorine is a greenish-yellow gas with an offensive odor. It is a potent irritant of the eyes, mucous membranes, and skin; exposure causes pulmonary irritation. Mild mucous membrane irritation occurs between 0.2 - 16 ppm; eye irritation at 15 ppm, and cough at 30 ppm. A level of 1,000 ppm is fatal after a few deep breaths. Studies have shown that individual people have developed eye irritation and headaches in concentrations as low as 1 to 2 ppm. Chlorine is produced industrially in large quantities for several uses. Besides being used in the production of organic chlorinated solvents, chlorine is liquefied for industrial and commercial uses. Liquefied Cl2 is used in swimming pools, as well as several other commercial sterilized applications.
