Detect Airborne Hazards Using ChemSee Dosimeters
Ammonia (NH) has a characteristic sharp odor that is accompanied by severe eye irritation; exposure also irritates the nose, throat, and lungs. Exposure to high concentrations can even be fatal. There are over 2 million farms in the United States (USDA 1985), several of which contain manure pits. Manure pit systems are used primarily on livestock farms to allow for cleaning of confinement areas. Inside the pit, the manure undergoes anaerobic fermentation, which produces several gases, one of which is ammonia. The decomposition of animal waste produces toxic ammonia vapors which must be regulated in order to maintain animal health. At 25 ppm, the mucus membranes of the eyes and respiratory tracts begin to hydrolyze, thus the animals become more susceptible to infectious diseases. Consequently, the rate of mortality and morbidity increase while conversion of feed to body weight decreases, resulting in reduced profits. The ChemSee Ammonia Dosimeter will help you determine ammonia concentrations in your animal growing 'louses and help you ensure proper ventilation.
