Choose the Card for the Sample Conditions



Residual azide can arise in pharmaceutical, biological, solvent-recovery and industrial process streams. The practical screening problem is not simply whether azide may be present: the sample pH, matrix, color, preparation requirements and potential interferences determine whether a visual field card is appropriate and which configuration should be used.

ChemSee offers two qualitative color-change detection cards. AZD-N2 is designed for reviewed neutral-to-mildly-acidic solutions; AZD-P2 addresses reviewed basic solutions and includes a pretreatment pouch intended to avoid hydrazoic-acid exposure during preparation. ChemSee reviews the application before quotation so the requested card and workflow match the actual sample.



QUALITATIVE SCREENING

No Electronic Reader Required

Interpret the prescribed visible response using the current product instructions. A documented positive produces a dark-brown to black response in the indicator zone. The cards indicate whether an applicable response occurs under the test conditions; they do not report an exact concentration or identify an individual azide species.

Under the documented kit configurations, no additional test reagents or electronic reader are required.

NEUTRAL / MILDLY ACIDIC

AZD-N2 Detection Card

Application: Biological and pharmaceutical solutions, selected wastewater, and other technically reviewed neutral-to-mildly-acidic liquid samples.

Sample conditions: pH 5–8.

Product response threshold: Detects azides above 50 ppm under the stated product conditions.

Documented kit: Detection card with integral color reference and full-color instructions.

Typical screening time: 1–2 minutes.

Storage: Below 75°F (24°C), under current instructions.

Shelf life: At least two years under the current storage instructions.

The threshold is a product specification, not a matrix-specific validated reporting limit or regulatory standard.


BASIC SOLUTIONS

AZD-P2 Detection Card

Application: Technically reviewed basic liquid samples.

Sample conditions: pH 8–14.

Product response threshold: Detects azides above 100 ppm under the stated product conditions.

Documented kit: Detection card with integral color reference, sample-preparation pouch and full-color instructions.

Pretreatment: Includes a pouch intended to avoid hydrazoic-acid exposure during sample preparation.

Typical screening time: 1–4 minutes, including preparation.

Storage: Below 75°F (24°C), under current instructions.

Shelf life: At least two years under the current storage instructions.


Why Application Review Matters

Colorimetric screening depends on more than nominal pH. Solvent identity, water content, sample color, suspended material, oxidants, reductants and other reactive components may alter sample preparation or obscure a visual response. ChemSee therefore asks what the sample is, where it comes from, the expected azide form and level, the process decision it must support and what confirmatory capability is available.

This review is especially important for recycled solvents, complex wastewater and pharmaceutical processes. It prevents a product threshold from being mistaken for a release specification, compliance limit or universal matrix performance claim.

A Controlled Screening Workflow

  1. Define the decision. Identify the process point, sample matrix, expected azide chemistry and action the result may support.
  2. Review compatibility. Provide pH, matrix, color, preparation needs and likely interferences to ChemSee.
  3. Select the configuration. Use AZD-N2 or AZD-P2 only for the reviewed sample conditions.
  4. Screen and document. Follow the current supplied instructions and record sample identity, conditions, lot and observed response.
  5. Escalate when necessary. Manage positive, uncertain or decision-critical results under the organization’s safety and confirmatory-testing procedure.

Screening and Safety Boundaries

AZD-N2 and AZD-P2 provide qualitative screening at their stated product thresholds. They are not quantitative instruments, complete chemical analyses, automatically validated pharmaceutical release or cleaning-verification methods, regulatory compliance methods, discharge authorizations, waste characterizations or disposal approvals. Do not use general web instructions to acidify, neutralize or dispose of azide-containing material. Follow current product documentation, the facility’s EHS procedures and applicable requirements.
