Food Protection Is a Readiness Function
The Defense Centers for Public Health defines food protection as an overarching term that includes both food safety and food defense. U.S. Army reporting on shipboard food inspection similarly ties safe, wholesome subsistence to keeping personnel healthy and mission ready.
During the COVID-19 response, a DoD lessons-learned review found that routine food-protection processes could be too cumbersome for crisis conditions and emphasized more agile planning, auditing, monitoring, and laboratory-sampling support.
Lesson for planners: tools and TTPs should be integrated, trained, documented, and exercised before a contingency—not improvised during one.
